Where Is Nobleton Situated?
The Township of King consists of three villages; King City, Schomberg and Nobleton. Compared to the other two, the village of Nobleton takes the third position in terms of population. It is present at an elevated height of around 300m, a small hike from downtown Toronto. Towards the north of Nobleton is the Oak Ridges Moraine which contains forests consisting of mainly pine trees along with some other species and some lakes. 2-3km from Nobleton in the northeast direction is present the Nobleton Lakes, which now have a golf course built next to them.
It is mainly located in the middle of the intersection of Highway 27 and the Kinds road. The farmlands are seen on the west and south side. So naturally, Nobleton is encircled by different lush scenic forests, which adds to the beauty of the village.
How Nobleton Came into Being
The history of Nobleton starts from the year 1800, when the Kings Township was planned out by the surveyor Stegman. Immigrants from England, Ireland and Scotland, etc., started settling in this area slowly, and as time passed, the population grew a lot more. Joseph Nobel, a local tavern keeper, settled down in the area along the King’s road and ninth concession. He bought off the land from John Robinson; the latter was given the land by the Crown themselves. Joseph was one of the first settlers in that location, and it is his name that the village of Nobleton was named after in 1812.
Slowly, the village started developing further as more people settled and new buildings and hotels and offices started opening. The first post office of Nobleton was established in 1851, where mail used to come thrice a week via the road of Vaughan Plank. At that time, there were approximately two general stores and a planing mill from which the merchants used to sell different goods to the people who were settling there.
Along with the general stores and taverns, the were two blacksmith shops located, one owned by a person named Henry McCluskey. Two telephone companies were also operational back then for people to communicate. Most of the civilization living in the area lived on farmlands, and the travelers stayed at the inns. In 1870, a new tavern was constructed, which famously went by the name of “The British American Hotel,” which was owned by James Busby.
Back then, people living in Nobleton used to socialize mainly through churches. Sunday services were held at multiple different churches, with the earliest congregation developing in the 1840s. The Methodist congregation was the first to come, and the church known as the Wesleyan Methodist Church was built. However, later it was shut down in 1896, and the materials left over from it was used to create another church, United Church which is still present to this date in Nobleton. Another church opened up in 1885 called the St. Mary’s Catholic Church which is still found and one of the most popular ones even now. The last church that was built was in 1985, known as the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church which got renovated after a few years.
The arena built-in 1949, known as the Nobleton Arena, was built by the people themselves and was one of the first ones in Ontario. This was used for recreational activities and other forms of entertainment, but it didn’t last long. In 1977 it was taken down, and a new building, “Nobleton Community Centre and Arena,” took its place instead.
As the years passed, Nobleton started developing more and more into a somewhat urbanized village. In between the 1950s and 60s, the southwest area of Nobelton developed more than the rest of the portions. The first library and gazebo came to life in 1967 on the 8 Sheardown Drive.
Nobleton started thriving even further in all areas, and in 1980, a band was created, which was considered one of the best in Toronto, Thomas McDonald being the band master. Education was also given more importance, and in 1912 a school fair was held, which has now become an annual event occurring at various locations.
What Is The Population Of Nobleton?
At present, the population of Nobleton is approximately 7176. There are beautiful cottages and houses built all over Nobleton, where its people live the peaceful village life. The ethnicity of people living there includes of mostly Italians, British and Canadians. However, now there are a lot of different ethnic groups living there, including South Asians, Chinese, etc. This town is represented by David Boyd, Ward 2 Councilor.
Business and Education in Nobleton
There are two business plazas present in the town, which contain pharmacies, a clinic, Foodland and much more, along with multiple small ones which are run by the locals over there. One famous store is the King Brewery which is a brew house, and at the Canadian Brewing Awards, it won the gold medal for its Pilsner.
There Is an option for catholic and public schools both for the children to attend. However, for high school, the students have to go to Kings City at the Kings Secondary School. There is also a private Montessori available, which has been running for almost 25 years now. The students attend the St. Mary Catholic School for the catholic education system, while the high school level students go to Cardinal Carter.
