The problem with Gypsy Moths in Toronto

The European Gypsy Moth (LDD Moth), is a non-native defoliating insect that feeds on a variety of tree species found in the Greater Toronto Area, typically oak dominant communities.

Since the Gypsy moth is firmly established in Toronto and North America, the complete removal of these insects is no longer a possibility. Homeowners must take steps to protect their trees!

What happens with Gypsy Moths?

Once Gypsy Moth caterpillars grow to about an inch (2.5 cm) in length by mid-June, they will move up the trunk to seek shelter from predators and heat.

Reduce the number of caterpillars on the trees in your yard by trapping them below the canopy.

Gypsy Moth service toronto

Our service includes:

  1. Inspect the deciduous trees on your property
  2. Remove any egg sacs that are present
  3. Drowned and disposed of the egg sacs
  4. Apply sticky barrier bands (enhanced with burlap) to prevent gypsy moth caterpillars from crawling up tree trunks and into tree canopies where they feed on the foliage.

Sticky barrier bands can protect trees from defoliation (eat all the tree leaves) by preventing primary and secondary invasions by caterpillars.

Timing

The sticky bands should be in place before the eggs hatch in June. Mosquito Toronto will apply the sticky barrier bands around key trees on your property in late April or May.

It is important that we do this before it's too late.

How much does prevention cost?

It is recommended that you protect as many trees on your property as possible. However, it's a priority to protect older, mature trees, especially oaks.

Trees Protected Cost
1-5 $99
6-10 $189
11-15 $279
